Fall Fashion Trend Alert: Clueless Inspired 90s Looks!
Anyone who’s ever watched Clueless has dreamt of wearing Cher’s yellow plaid skirt and blazer set. But, it’s hard to find a matching set that is Clueless inspired without feeling like you’re wearing a Halloween costume.
Luckily for all the preppy fashion lovers out there, prep is back. Sweater vests, trousers, argyle, plaid, and houndstooth are just some of the styles and patterns you’ll find in this aesthetic.
What if we told you that we had some Clueless-inspired sets and pieces to give you a little 90s schoolgirl feel in 2021? Now you can feel a little like Cher daily.
While the statement yellow plaid tennis skirt and blazer may be too recognizable for everyday wear, we have some inspired, toned-down options to give you the same vibe.
1. Pretty Little Thing
Pretty Little Thing is an affordable way to try out new trends. Their styles are current, and their prices are low which means you can experiment with your wardrobe without breaking the bank.
The first set worth mentioning is the Yellow Check Print Mini Skirt and Halterneck Crop Top duo. This set had that pop of yellow that’s reminiscent of Cher’s iconic look, but the cut is updated to what’s in right now. Instead of a tennis skirt, this mini skirt is form-fitting. Along with the tighter, cropped halterneck, this set is a perfect fun look for a girl’s night out!
The next set we’ve got to share is the Check Button Skirt and Boyfriend Blazer. This set comes in pink, stone, and grey shades. The boyfriend blazer is a long-line, looser-fitting style that offsets the mini skirt. The mini skirt has black asymmetrical buttons to add some flair and interest.
This is again, a modern take on a 90s classic. While Cher’s blazer was cut right at the hips, this long-line one is more in line with the blazer styles we’re seeing today.
2. Boohoo
Boohoo is also on the more affordable side with constant sales that make it tempting to buy more than we need. They’ve got some unique takes on the Clueless fashion that we need to tell you about!
The Check Print Blazer Dress is a fun, business-appropriate option for our more practical ladies out there. It comes in sage and pink, giving you the option to be bold or muted. It features a V neckline and a slightly longer hem than most of Boohoo’s mini skirts. The pattern and feel of this blazer dress give us Cher on a business casual level.
Going with the office-appropriate theme, their Woven Wide Leg Check Pants are very similar in style to the plaid tennis skirts we’re used to. These pants show us that you don’t have to wear a skirt to replicate that 90s preppy aesthetic we’re trying to achieve. The wide-leg cut is trendy, and the plaid pattern takes us back to that same iconic Clueless outfit. Boohoo carries these pants in shades of lilac and black.
This Boohoo set is going to be your new fall and winter go-to. The Boucle Checked Shacket and Mini Skirt Set is adorable. It features a shacket (which is a shirt and jacket hybrid) that will keep you cozy against the crisp autumn air. The form-fitting mini skirt is in the same check-inspired pattern. Paired with a turtleneck and some tights, this set is perfect for the office and definitely suitable for the upcoming temperature drops.
The last set is for loungewear lovers. The Petite Check Knitted Jumper and Short Co-ord is in a large monochrome plaid. It’s cozy, comfy and the perfect mix of prep and lounge. You can wear the sweater on its own with your favorite jeans or a mini skirt for a casual day look or you can even wear the shorts with a simple top for a lowkey style that’s perfect for running errands or Netflix and chilling.
3. Reformation
For Love & Lemons is a popular brand that retails on the Reformation website. Their Cher Cardigan, Crop Sweater Tank and Mini Skirt set is the perfect fuzzy, fall outfit.
Cardigans have been taking over the fall fashion trends at the moment, so this cardigan and cropped thank combination is perfect. The creamsicle orange and light pink color combo give us sweet schoolgirl, but the houndstooth print edges up the whole set.
Each piece is sold separately between $90 to $165, making this one of our pricier set options. But, you can’t put a price on quality. This set is made well and will stay in your wardrobe for the long haul.
L’Academie is also a high-quality, well-known brand sold on Reformation. Their Abigail Blazer and Natalia Mini Skirt coordinating pieces make the perfect, minimalistic set. This set features a nude color palette in a signature plaid print.
The blazer is boxy on top, giving it a boyfriend fit. Paired with the contrasting tight mini skirt, this set is balanced, professional, and chic. Perfect for the girls who love to be bold without a lot of colors, this set is fun and playful in an understated way.
4. ASOS
Stradivarius Wide Leg Relaxed Dad Pants and Double Breasted Blazer is definitely a set worth mentioning. Both these pieces are current and trendy on their own.
They can be worn casually with a simple halterneck cropped tank or a great-fitting pair of denim jeans. But, together, this set makes a great business casual look.
Want to spice it up for a night out? Throw on a lacy bralette underneath to peak through and you have an elegant, chic look for date night. The plaid pattern and blazer motif still brings us back to our original Clueless inspiration even though we traded in the tennis skirt for a wide-leg trouser.
